Welcome to SustainSki - Your Guide to Sustainability in the Ski Industry
We’re thrilled to have you here for this special launch and to introduce you to why we’ve created SustainaSki, the challenges the ski industry faces & what you can expect from us in the future.
What is SustainaSki
SustainaSki is a community dedicated to sustainability in the winter sports industry. Whether you’re a ski enthusiast, an industry professional or simply someone who cares about the future of skiing, this newsletter is designed for you. We’ll provide insights, updates and expert perspectives on the biggest sustainability challenges and solutions in the world.
Did you know? Research indicates that the Alps have seen an average 8.4% decline in snow cover per decade since the 1970s. SustainaSki is here to make sense of these challenges and highlight the solutions that can protect the future of the sport we love.
Why?
Collaborations, partnerships and relationships all have immense power when it comes to tackling sustainability issues. Our goal is to provide easy-to-read insights into the sustainability challenges surrounding the ski industry and how we can all play a part in solving them together. We will be:
Uniting technical sustainability professionals and ski enthusiasts to drive impact in the industry
Informing a wider audience about sustainability challenges in skiing and potential solutions
Leveraging the power of collective action to solve some of the industry’s biggest issues
What’s the Problem?
The ski industry depends entirely on the natural environment to exist. Yet, many of the financial and operational needs of the industry directly contribute to the environmental challenges that threaten its very future.
For example: Travel and transport to ski resorts accounts for ~73% of a resort’s carbon footprint, with flights and long-distance car travel being the biggest culprits. The industry does, however, also depend on the millions of visitors who travel to these resorts to stay financially viable and fund the many necessary sustainable practices.
The simple fact is, we are running out of time. The consequences of inaction will not just limit future generations’ access to winter sports - it also means devastating economic repercussions for the many communities that so heavily rely on the lucrative industry. Entire towns and villages are built around the financial security that ski resorts provide, from seasonal workers to local businesses that depend on tourism. If ski resorts fail, thousands of jobs could disappear, stripping away economic stability from communities that have thrived because of skiing for generations.
The urgency for action isn’t just about preserving a sport; it’s about protecting livelihoods, economies and entire ways of life.
This paradox is just one of the many sustainability challenges we aim to explore throughout the SustainaSki journey.
